Before writing this report, let me quickly give you some background on the lifts and escalators that I have seen during my time at DisneyLand in Anaheim, California with my family.
Brief Overview
While I was at DisneyLand in Anaheim, I have encountered four sets of very tall MontgomeryKONE escalators, a set of two very fast MontgomeryKONE traction units (partially outdoor as the first landing had a rear door that opened on the outside of the building), this OTIS hydro here that I managed to ride and film & another OTIS hydro that I didn’t get to ride nor film. These lifts, regardless, were still very awesome lifts, but for now, I will be going into a description of this amazing lift.
What made this lift so amazing?
This particular lift is so amazing because it’s a full-blown commercial hydraulic lift installed fully outdoors, which is rather unusual for an outdoor lift. This alone made it amazing. Upon first glance, it looks like a pretty standard lift that you would typically find in a low rise office building, yet it was installed in the middle of an amusement park.
The appearance
Going into the lift, you’re greeted by plain wall panels, a rear set of doors opening out to ride on the upper level, fluorescent lighting, & a vandal-resistant OTIS Series 4 button panel with a Series 4 mark 1 floor indicator & diamond plate metal flooring. The lanterns were fully functional, and all four lanterns lit up green. The buttons lit up in red and the numbers were shown in a turquoise color on the box indicator.
The ride
Going up
Enough with the appearance, let’s now ride this lift. Without further ado, we took the lift up to the upper level where the ride was. Upon the doors closing (rather smoothly with no slam), the motor started whirring into action & the lift started slowly accelerating to its full speed of 40 meters per minute heading upward. On the way up, the motor did not sound very loud at all, so it was a ride expected of a standard hydraulic lift installed by OTIS. Rather, the stops on this lift were unusually smooth since OTIS hydraulics have a reputation for jolting to a start and a stop. This alone set this lift apart from many other OTIS hydros I’ve been on. The lift was not even in leveling phase for three seconds before the doors started opening prematurely and the two gongs went off, with arrows pointing down on the rear landing lanterns. This was the fastest I have ever seen a hydraulic lift level from OTIS. The ride going up was very quick for the distance, as for most hydros installed in North America.
Going down
The trip going down was quite interesting. The lift plunged down to its full speed the second the doors closed, making it seem like a single-speed lift due to how violent the start was. It’s also interesting to note that the motor sounded nothing short of an underwater submarine while going down, adding some character to the lift. While a little bit slower going down, to top it all off, it also shook against the guide rails, making it an even more fun ride on the way down. At the last part of the trip, the lift only spent two seconds in leveling speed before opening its doors prematurely. By the time the lift was fully level with the first floor landing, the doors were already over halfway open, continuing to open with the chime going off. All in all, this was a super nice basic hydraulic lift that I will continue to cherish, as it is my first fully outdoor hydraulic lift that is not on the beach.
