After my funny comparison of Charlotte to New York City, for this blog post, I have decided to compare Charlotte to Chicago! In this blog post, I use the data from 220 different videos I have watched from both Charlotte & Chicago to compare the two & point out the major differences between the two cities in terms of there lifts.
10 best U.S. cities to film lifts
- Queen city Charlotte
- Sister city Los Angeles
- Prince Houston
- Princess Fort Lauderdale
- Twin sister city Miami
- Princess Atlanta
- King Pittsburgh
- Prince Milwaukee
- Brother city Prince Chicago
- Baby Prince Secaucus
Charlotte
As you may have read in my previous comparison blog post, Charlotte was far superior to New York City. This is especially true because the building designs today (even the basic ones) look far nicer & have the potential to have a lot more character. Now, when comparing Charlotte's lifts to Chicago's lifts, there is little to no difference with the amount of character they have. The only difference is the abundance of a certain lift.
The Otis Series 1 is a popular lift button throughout Charlotte's buildings. About 1 out of every 10 buildings will have a lift with Series 1 buttons, according to 110 videos I have seen about Charlotte's lifts. Between the Series 1's alone, I have watched the videos very closely, multiple times to look for differences of how they were running. I was able to spot even the smallest differences of how they were running. Therefore, finding the same design of a lift throughout Charlotte is not so boring after all.
The same applies for the other types of lifts. For example, most of the ThyssenKrupp lifts throughout Charlotte are worth taking a look at & filming. Not to mention the university of Charlotte is known for there ThyssenKrupp MRL lifts. They each run a little bit differently & have slightly different behavior, making them extremely fun to ride & film. Unlike NYC, where they have a set VF program for the majority of there lifts, ThyssenKrupp truly makes Charlotte a city where lift enthusiasts looking for modern character could easily fall to the deepest of deep love right away.
Chicago
While Charlotte has some of the most characterful modern lifts of any U.S. city (besides LA), Chicago is also a very nice city for filming lifts. While the lifts are not AS EPIC as those in Charlotte or LA, they each have mostly really nice button designs, which is something lift photographers like me look for before filming a lift. Some of Chicago's lifts are straight up weird. For example, the 17-story street lifts at Chicago's Embassy Suites is one example. Or the hexagonal Otis glass lifts at the Water Tower Place mall, where its shape & quietness give it character.
I must admit, there are some really unique traction lifts throughout Chicago too. However, the most epic traction lifts could be found in the tallest towers, for example, the Willis Tower's Schindler lift has a rocket s-curve when accelerating to 500 meters per minute, while the John Hancock Tower's Otis lift has a rocket s-curve even stronger when accelerating to 550 meters per minute. Harsh acceleration is what gives high speed lifts there much-deserved character.
Fujitec lifts are a popularity throughout Chicago, too. Not the crappy Fujitec lifts you find everywhere in NYC. Heck no! I'm talking about the Fujitec lifts with the very amazing futuristic square floor indicators, with quick A/D rate. These are some of the most amazing mid-rise traction lifts you could find while you're in Chicago, as they have a lot of character in the way they run & they each run slightly differently.
Conclusion
When comparing Charlotte's lifts to Chicago's lifts, you will find the difference between the amount of character is so low, you're practically in Charlotte even when you're in Chicago. So in conclusion, any of the 10 cities you go to for filming lifts will be at the very minimum almost exactly as nice as Charlotte!
